Background on Ozone Classification

1-Hour Ozone Nonattainment Classification

1-Hour Ozone Nonattainment and Maintenance Area data was obtained from EPA's Green Book (January, 2003). The latest version of EPA's Green Book, including a listing of 1-hr Ozone Classifications, can be found at http://www.epa.gov/air/oaqps/greenbk/oindex.html.

For this exercise and to streamline data mapping, only counties that intersect Interstate 95 and the New Jersey Turnpike were included in the interactive maps. If a county lies within two nonattainment areas the higher of the two levels is used to represent that county.

Example:

8-Hour Ozone Design Values for 2000-2002

The 8-hr Ozone 2000-2002 Design Values database was obtained from http://www.epa.gov/airtrends/ozone_design_values_2000-2002.pdf. The design values were derived from EPA's Air Quality System (AQS) on August 11, 2003. In some cases, the database is still under review. Only counties that intersect Interstate 95 and the New Jersey Turnpike are included in these interactive mapping exercise. To facilitate viewing, the design values are labeled in parts per billion (ppb) even though the National Ambient Air Quality Standard is parts per million (ppm).
